GMI’s Impact on Medical Device Innovation and Manufacturing

Medical device technology is a rapidly evolving and growing industry, expected to achieve a worldwide revenue of almost $540 billion by the end of 2025. But its impact is measured in more than just revenue. Patients are enjoying better medical outcomes thanks to new and innovative medical devices. At Indiana-based GMI Corporation, we work with medical device companies around the world to manufacture the precision parts needed to continue improving upon today’s technology.

Consider a few of the devices GMI has helped manufacture over the past decade:

  • A neurosurgery instrument that allows surgeons to directly access a brain tumor while minimizing trauma to the surrounding tissues.
  • A bone-cutting tool with a precise drilling bit that also protects against incidental soft tissue damage.
  • Air gas components for the oxygen tanks that are found in many operating rooms.

As an FDA-approved, ISO 13485-certified manufacturer, GMI is uniquely positioned to support innovative new medical technology. Consider why CNC machining plays such an important role in medical device manufacturing, and why GMI continues to invest in the knowledge and machinery needed to bring more innovative medical devices to reality.

A need for tight tolerances

As medical technology relies on increasingly complex devices, the need for precision has never been more impactful. Most precision parts begin with an intricate and highly specialized design, and even a tiny inaccuracy can result in failures or unintended consequences for the patient.

GMI’s business has been built on meeting the most demanding design specifications. We bring an unparalleled combination of expertise, experience and material selection to our medical device Original Equipment Manufacturers. Our high precision CNC machines, precision measurement tools and advanced tooling options means we can handle complex geometries and intricate internal features.

Design for Manufacturing (DFM) support

Companies like GMI often work with medical device developers to ensure that their products achieve optimal design while reducing unnecessary waste and expenses. For example, our DFM team will offer suggestions that prioritize ease and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing. While we are not involved in the initial development phase, we play an important role in fine-tuning devices to enhance their quality and bring them successfully to market in a timely manner. GMI also works to meet the regulatory requirements that accompany the medical device business to safeguard patient health.

A sterile environment to meet medical device specifications

Certain medical devices must be manufactured or packaged in a controlled area that is free from airborne contaminants. GMI’s controlled environment room is a sterile space that includes air filtration systems, temperature and humidity control, and static control systems that allow devices to be manufactured and packaged in the most sterile of environments. It can also be converted into a Class 8 cleanroom if needed.

A vast network of manufacturing partners to handle additional requirements

GMI recognizes the importance of collaboration when it comes to intricate medical device manufacturing. If GMI does not have secondary processing or materials to complete a project, we can reach out to one of our contract manufacturing partners who can handle those additional requirements. GMI has invested years building relationships with other qualified companies in the industry. Our final price estimates reflect the work done by those outside vendors, so OEMS do not have to be concerned about surprise charges.

The future of medical devices

The medical device industry is poised for continued transformation, especially as technology advances and healthcare continues to evolve. As the population ages, experts expect a growing demand for new medical devices.  For OEMs striving to bring cutting-edge medical devices to market, GMI offers the precision and expertise necessary to navigate the complexities of modern manufacturing. Partner with us to transform your innovative concepts into high-quality, reliable medical solutions that meet the growing demands of the healthcare industry.
